Masja Straetemans


Masja Straetemans, M.Sc., Ph.D., is an epidemiologist at KIT Health. Her background includes environmental health science and public health. Masja is specialised in infectious disease epidemiology and has extensive experience in evidence based healthcare, including systematic reviews and operational/field research of tuberculosis.

Education and prior work, special functions

After receiving an M.Sc. in Environmental Health Sciences (1999, University Maastricht, the Netherlands) she obtained her Ph.D. at the Radboud University (2004, Nijmegen, the Netherlands) on the occurrence of Otitis Media with Effusion in children.

From 2004-2006 she was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA). Here she led several investigations on a wide variety of public health topics. In 2006, she was an epidemiologist at the Robert Koch Institute (Germany) who seconded her in 2007 to the Scientific Advice Unit of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Sweden). During these two years she was mainly involved in teaching epidemiology and improving transparency of responses to requests for scientific advice and harmonisation of risk assessment procedures for emerging infectious diseases. Mid-2008 she joined the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation were she continued to provide technical assistance and building capacity for epidemiological and operational research in Asian and African countries focused on infectious diseases.

She joined KIT In 2010 and was initially closely involved in teaching. Since 2011 she has been a member of the external monitoring and evaluation team of the TB REACH initiative of the Stop TB Partnership. She is also involved in data analyses of several projects, systematic reviews and in supporting the development of a collaboration for Evidence Based Health Care in Africa.

Description of group’s work

The work of the KIT epidemiology group is focused on strengthening public health activities and disease control programmes. It combining expertise in epidemiology, environmental sciences, health information management and geographical information systems (GIS), and conducts research, provides advisory and M&E services and develops and delivers tailor-made training programmes. Coordinating the Collaboration for Evidence-Based Health Care (CEBHA), the group supports training and implementation of evidence-based health care and policy development.
