Stefan Petrutiu is a project manager and entrepreneur with 8 years of experience in designing and implementing sustainability strategies, and building innovative partnerships in cacao, coffee and tea sectors.

He has a bachelor’s in Economics and Computer Science and an MSc from Wageningen University in the Netherlands in Urban Environmental Management. He has also followed courses on Lean Data Management and Human-Centered Design from Acumen Academy.

He has worked on climate smart agriculture, diversification and living income roadmaps in East Africa and South America, and led the development and application of digital farm management systems and blockchain traceability apps for access to finance and markets.

He has been the lead author of impact reports, evaluations and living income studies, and research papers on topics such as investments in agribusiness in fragile states, and blockchain use cases in agriculture.

Promoting the role of smallholder farmers in the mitigation of climate change

This article explores the drivers for smallholder farmers’ participation in climate change mitigation. In particular it aims to describe the mechanisms by which smallholder farmers can participate in and benefit from programmes which offset or inset carbon emissions and offer incentives for the provision of ecosystem services.

Inclusive Business Cases Linking Agriculture and Conservation

Agricultural production frequently competes with forest conservation. The issue is particularly significant in developing countries where economic pressures frequently drive projects oriented at short-term economic gains at the expense of deforestation and long-term sustainable development. This working paper offers a review of business models combining agriculture with conservation objectives and portrays two illustrative case studies from the cocoa and coffee value chains.

Value Chain Approaches for Social Change

Over the past decades, there has been an extensive transformation in global agri-food value chains, resulting in advances in efficiency, food quality, and food safety. Despite this transformation, many farmers and labourers active as primary producers in these chains have not experienced improvements in their living standards. Based on a study conducted in 2020 by KIT Royal Tropical Institute and Oxfam Novib, this paper explores value chain approaches that reduce social inequality and enable smallholder farmers and labourers to have decent livelihoods.

Harnessing blockchain technology for commodity chains

With a wide range of potential benefits – such as improved traceability, food safety, and environmental sustainability, as well as increased farmer income– blockchain has become an increasingly popular technology option for commodity value chains. Yet, there is little knowledge among agri-food professionals of how the technology works, and there is (still) limited evidence of the impact blockchain has on the efficiency, the transparency of transactions, and the costs and benefits this may have for smallholders in particular.
