Scholarship Master of Public Health and Health Equity (MPH/HE)

Update 25 September 2023: Every year the KIT Fund offers a limited number of scholarships to talented health professionals from low and middle income countries to study a Master’s programme at KIT Royal Tropical Institute.

In spring 2024 you can apply for a KIT Fund scholarship for academic year 2024-2025. Please check the requirements below. Financial means for the scholarships come from donations from foundations, organizations and persons, who support our goals.

Profile

The scholarship is open to candidates who fulfil the general eligibility criteria for KIT Scholarship as written below. In addition, we would like to encourage the application of candidates from fragile states who are currently working or who have concrete plans to work in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, including Gender Based Violence. Since this scholarship is part of the initiative ‘Women Leaders in Global Health’ we would like to especially encourage women for this scholarship opportunity.

These scholarships are open to applicants from low and middle income countries. People not eligible for OKP scholarships are especially encouraged to apply.

Programme

The scholarship candidate will study the Master of Public Health / Health Equity. When applicable, scholarship grantees will be asked to use their thematic areas as a focus for the different assignments and the thesis project lined to the Master programme. The student will work on a series of assignments throughout the year aiming to build the required competencies of the Master programme and as preparation for the thesis work. Not only the thesis research but also these other assignments can be partly related to whenever the assignment allows for it. The different assignments may include, a paper describing the broad determinants of health of a public health problem, the development of a full project proposal, the development of a protocol for a qualitative research study, a policy brief and a news release.

Selection Criteria for KIT Fund scholarships

Admission Criteria KIT Masters programmes

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent academic training in medicine, nursing, public health or other fields of health sciences, economics, social science.

A minimum of three years of relevant working experience, including managerial responsibilities in health related services in a low resource country and including some experience in public health.

Proven proficiency in spoken and written English academic TOEFL or IELTS test. A minimum written TOEFL score of 550, iBT TOEFL score of 80, computer based TOEFL score of 213, or an IELTS academic score of 6.0 is required.

Computer literacy is required.

Additional Eligibility Criteria for KIT Fund Scholarships

A candidate applying for the scholarship from KIT Fund must:

This scholarship opportunity is open to candidates of the countries mentioned above.

Have been unconditionally admitted to KIT for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity. This means that the candidate must have met all the academic and administrative requirements set by KIT Royal Tropical Institute.

Please do not apply for this scholarship if you are already in the process of the OKP Scholarship!

Have proven interest and work experience optionally in one or more of the mentioned thematic areas, and/or clear plans to continue in this field based on motivation letter, curriculum vitae and essay.

Not be employed by: a. a multinational corporation (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft); b. a large national and/or a large commercial organisation; c. a bilateral donor organisation (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid); d. a multilateral donor organisation, (e.g. a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB); e. an international NGO (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care).

Have a proven commitment for the public case (for example, work in remote rural areas or for disadvantaged populations).

Work in a field where a study at KIT can make relevant contribution.

Be in a position to introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge in work.

Be available full-time to pursue the course or program without interruption, and be physically and mentally able to participate in the entire program.

Endorse the objectives and aims of the KIT Fund. The aims of the KIT Fund (and of the donor) cannot be achieved if the fellowship holder does not return to his or her home country. Therefore a student must return to his/her country of origin after graduation and contribute to improving the health situation in his/her country with the knowledge acquired during the masters programme. Please note that scholarships holders will be asked to sign an agreement about this.

Procedure

Step 1

Obtain academic admission for the MPH / HE. Only accepted applicants can apply for this scholarship. If you have not yet obtained academic admission to the masters programme of your choice please make sure to apply as soon as possible for admission in our online application system via the webpage of the masters programme. (your evaluation will be given priority) (Please note that this scholarship is only available for the full-time programme for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity)

Step 2

After you have been admitted to the masters programme, upload the following documents in your existing file to the KIT online application system:

A motivation letter: Why you are applying to the KIT Fund and how you plan to use the skills acquired to the advantage of the public case. Please also indicate also if you are applying for on the above mentioned thematic focus areas or not. (Upload your letter in your file in KIT online application system with clear title: ‘Your name, Motivation KIT Fund 2024-2025’)

Write a 500-700 word essay describing a a public health problem that you have experienced in the last two years that you would like to discuss or address in the course. Explain how this problem has consequences for the community and the health system. (This can optionally be on one of the above mentioned thematic focus areas). Upload your essay in your file in online application system with clear title: ‘Your name, Essay KIT Fund 2024-2025’

Complete applications will be reviewed in week 1 of June 2024 and applicants will be notified of the results and contacted for a telephone interview. A final selection is made in week 2 of June 2024. The selected applicant will have to agree with the rules and regulations of the KIT Fund and the obligations for this scholarship within 8 days of being selected. Not adhering to this will result in the offer of the scholarship to the next candidate on the reserve list of the scholarship.

Complete applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results and contacted for a telephone interview if on shortlist.
