Young people’s sexuality

A focus on young people is necessary to work towards sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. The current youth population is the largest ever, with about 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24. Many of them are living in low-income countries and do not have full access to quality sexual and reproductive health information and services.

We believe that all young people have the right to experience their sexuality in a healthy, safe, and pleasurable way. Young people—regardless of where they live—should have full access to youth friendly sexual and reproductive health information and services, as well as comprehensive sexuality education that is gender sensitive and non-discriminatory.

KIT Royal Tropical Institute generates insights into young people’s perspectives, experiences, expectations and desires related to their sexuality and sexual health in order to make services and information more responsive to their realities and wishes.

Approaches

We focus on young people as individuals with the right to be heard and to make informed choices about their sexuality, reproduction and health. By applying a youth centred approach we aim to strengthen young people’s agency and voice in relation to their sexuality and sexual health.

Our methods include (but aren’t limited to):

  • operational research
  • impact research
  • intervention studies
  • evaluation of policies and programmes
  • tailor-made trainings
  • capacity building
  • eLearning
  • Meaningful involvement of young people is key in all methods. Gender equality and sexual diversity are cross-cutting issues in KIT’s work on young people and sexuality. Special attention is given to young people from vulnerable or marginalised communities.
